About WNEP
WNEP-TV, branded as WNEP 16, is the local ABC affiliate serving Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania. Licensed to Scranton, it broadcasts a high-definition digital signal on VHF channel 12 from a transmitter on Penobscot Mountain near Mountain Top. Owned by Tegna Inc., WNEP also operates a low-power translator W59CL channel 59, licensed to Williamsport.
History of WNEP
The station first signed on the air on July 1, 1953, as WGBI-TV, owned by Scranton Broadcasters, Inc., along with WGBI radio (910 AM, now WEJL; and 92.3 FM, now WEZX). It originally carried programming from all four networks, but was primarily a CBS affiliate. In 1954, the Scranton Times bought the WGBI stations. On February 1, 1958, the station changed its call letters to WDAU-TV (standing for Dawns Across Upon), to match WDAU radio (1400 AM, now WQFN; and 106.9 FM, now WKRZ-FM). The radio stations were sold off in the early 1960s. In 1966, the Times sold WDAU to a group of local businessmen, who changed the call letters to the current WNEP-TV on December 15. The new owners wanted to give the station its own identity separate from the Times newspaper. During the late 1950s, WDAU was briefly affiliated with the NTA Film Network.
In 1982, WNEP was purchased by The New York Times Company. In 1986, it switched its affiliation to ABC. Prior to 1986, ABC was affiliated with WNEP's current sister station, WBRE-TV. WNEP became the dominant station in the market soon after switching to ABC. In 1998, the New York Times Company sold WNEP to Landmark Communications. In 2008, Landmark sold WNEP to Gannett Company. On June 29, 2015, Gannett Company split in two, with one side specializing in print media and the other side specializing in broadcast and digital media. WNEP was retained by the latter company, named Tegna. WNEP has a rich history, evolving from its early days as WGBI-TV to becoming the powerhouse ABC affiliate it is today.
